In Roman times, the middle of March marked the start of spring. You may also be surprised by the fact about Romans and their love for wines. Wine was given prime importance in the Roman diet and was available to slaves & peasants in the same way as to aristocrats. Its also said that an average Roman, whether slave, peasant, aristocrat or some other; had a daily wine intake of around 1 gallon. However, poor quality drinking water was considered responsible for such amazing Roman wine intake. 

Its also said that Romans never consumed any of their wines in full-strength. Rather they used to considerably add water to wine in order to decrease its strong sensation & alcohol content.
